Apple just concluded its annual iPhone launch event titled “Awe Dropping,” where it announced the iPhone 17 series, Apple Watch Series 11, Watch Ultra 3, and the all-new AirPods Pro 3. The new iPhones feature an updated design with a prominent new camera bar at the back that Apple has tagged “Camera Plateau.” The Pro models get a new 8x telephoto lens, and many more upgrades. The A19 Pro SoC brings better efficiency, dedicated neural accelerator, new camera ISP for better photography and videography experiences, and more. But the star of the show was the all-new thin and light iPhone Air, which replaces the “Plus” model. Here is a quick summary of Apple iPhone 17 announcement.
iPhone Air: Apple’s Thinnest and Lightest iPhone Yet
The iPhone Air is Apple’s biggest redesign since 2017 when it announced the iPhone X. The new Air model is sleek at 5.6mm, and weighs just 165g, marginally heavier than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge (review), which weighs 163g. The iPhone Air comes with Ceramic Shield 2 Glass on the front and back, which Apple claims is 4x more resistant to cracks. Its body is made from spacecraft titanium, which offers it strength and durability. With sustainability in mind, Apple employs 80% recycled titanium to make the frame.
The iPhone Air features a 6.5-inch ProMotion display with thin bezels, and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate (1Hz to 120Hz). Under the hood is the all-new A19 Pro SoC featuring a six-core CPU (including four efficiency cores), a five-core GPU with second generation dynamic caching and neural accelerator, and a 16-Core NPU. Apple says the neural accelerator offers MacBook Pro-level GPU performance in iPhones.
Apple is also using a N1 wireless chip, its custom silicon for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Thread radios, for the iPhone Air. Lastly, the new iPhone uses Apple’s new C1X 5G Modem, which the brand claims is 2x faster than the iPhone 16e’s C1, and consumes 30% less energy than the modem on the iPhone 16 Pro.

In the photography department, the iPhone Air comes with a single 48MP fusion camera with 2x lossless zoom. The camera also supports 4K 60fps video recording. Up front, the iPhone Air gets an 18MP center stage camera, which can record in both portrait and landscape mode. It also supports dual capture, allowing the use of both front and rear cameras simultaneously to record a vlog.
One of the biggest changes this year is that the Air model will be eSIM-only worldwide. Apple says removing the physical SIM card saves space to house a bigger battery, and eSIM is easy to use and offers better security. The iPhone Air will be available at a starting price of $999 for the 256GB storage model and will also be available in 512GB and 1TB variants.
iPhone 17: ProMotion 120Hz Display, Upgraded 18MP Front Camera, and More
The base iPhone 17 model now comes with significant upgrades, including a slightly larger 6.3-inch ProMotion screen with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate (1Hz to 120Hz), and now also supports always-on display. It is also brighter with 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness, and features Ceramic Shield 2 glass, with seven-layer anti-reflective coating. Apple says the new screen is now 3x more scratch resistant as well.
Under the hood is a 3nm, A19 SoC with an updated display engine to enable ProMotion and always-on display. It features a six-core CPU, five-core GPU and 16-Core NPU. Apple has also upgraded the camera system on the new iPhone 17 – it now features a 48MP main camera with 2x lossless zoom, and a new 48MP ultrawide camera that also doubles as a macro lens. There is also a brand new 18MP Center Stage front camera and can also record stable videos with the rear camera Action Mode.

iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max: Triple 48MP Cameras, Vapour Chamber Cooling and More
Finally, the iPhone 17 Pro models are getting major upgrades too. With a striking new design, the iPhone 17 Pro features a new unibody chassis, and vapor chamber cooling with 20x more thermal conductivity. Apple says it helps in offering sustained performance, whether playing games or recording videos, or performing photo or video editing. Apple also mentioned that it offers 40% better sustained performance over the iPhone 16 Pro.
The iPhone 17 Pro features a 6.3-inch display whereas the iPhone 17 Pro Max comes with a 6.9-inch display, both featuring ProMotion tech with 120Hz screen refresh rate. The display also comes with new Ceramic Shield, which is 4x more resistant to cracks and features a new seven-layer anti-reflective coating to reduce the glare.

The eSIM-only models will have slightly bigger batteries, thanks to the space saved by removing the physical SIM card slot. In terms of photography, both the Pro models now come with three 48MP sensors – wide angle lens, ultrawide angle and a telephoto lens with upgraded 8x zoom, and focal length equivalent to 200mm.
